Island Health issues warning about the risk of eating raw BC oysters

Island Health is telling restaurants to warn customers before they order raw oysters harvested in BC.

There’s been an ongoing outbreak of a gastrointestinal illness associated with eating raw oysters from BC waters.

Medical Health Officer Dr. Paul Hasselback says the illness is caused by a naturally occurring bacteria that thrives in warm water.

Hasselback says there have been 15 cases of the illness reported to Island Health, and 50 cases reported across the province.

Most cases are never reported so the number of illnesses caused by raw BC oysters is likely much higher.
