An island-wide social media group, which was on standby for Wednesday night’s fire in Cobble Hill, is looking to keep animals safe during disasters.
Chris Panas is with the Vancouver Island Emergency Animal Evacuation Network. She says the Facebook page allows people to find safe locations for different animals.
“We have several different sections in the notes on the page: One deals with dogs, one with cats, one with exotic animals such as reptiles and birds, one with large livestock animals and then another for smaller livestock.”
Panas says the idea started in early July after the Dog Mountain fire near Sproat Lake caused plenty of chaos and confusion among island residents.
She says the network was created because there didn’t seem to be a local way to get in touch with people about helping animals.
