The MP for Nanaimo Cowichan says the federal government’s new anti-terrorism bill jeopardizes Canadians’ freedoms, and Jean Crowder says that’s why the NDP will not back it.
Bill C-51 would give police and intelligence agencies sweeping new powers.
Crowder says those powers would come with very little oversight. And the vague definition of “disruption” could lead to average Canadians being targeted.
The Liberals, meanwhile, say they’ll support C-51 if there are some changes. Saanich Gulf Islands MP, and Green Leader, Elizabeth May is siding with the NDP and calling for the bill to be scrapped.
But a new survey by Angus Reid shows the NDP could be in the minority on this issue.
82 per cent of respondents say they support C-51, and 36 per cent it doesn’t go far enough.
The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 per cent 19 times out of 20.
