Cowichan Valley embracing drug return program

The BC Pharmacy Association says people are really buying into the BC Medications Return Program.  They’re a partner in the program with Canada’s Health Products Stewardship Association, an industry group that funds 100 per cent of the cost.

Cowichan Valley residents have doubled the amount of medications returned since 2009. Last year 2300 kilograms of expired prescriptions or over-the-counter drugs were taken back to retailers.

The Pharmacy Association’s Allison Nourse says there’s good reason not to flush them or toss them in the trash.

Nourse says returning old medications to your pharmacy is free. Pills should be emptied into a bag, while creams and liquids can be returned in their original container as long as the personal information on the labels is blacked out.
