North Cowichan Issues Temporary Use Permit

North Cowichan council has issued a temporary use permit for a women’s winter warming shelter at 2003 University Way.

School District 79 owns the old concession building and the Cowichan Women Against Violence Society will operate the shelter from 5 pm to 9 am until March 31.

Women in need will get meals and a warm place to sleep and the permit includes conditions that require security measures and daily sweeps of the area to ensure it’s safe and clean.

Opponents cited safety concerns, as the shelter is very close to Wendy’s Place, a local daycare.

The society is aiming to be open by December 20.

Duncan council defeated motion’s for a women’s shelter three times.
