MPs are back at work in the House of Commons, and most security restrictions have been lifted in Ottawa after Wednesday’s tragic shooting.
24 year old Nathan Cirillo was gunned down as he stood guard at the National War Memorial. The suspected gunman, 32-year-old Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, was killed by Kevin Vickers, the Parliamentary Sergeant at Arms. Police now say he was the only shooter.
There was thunderous applause for Vickers as he took his usual place in the House.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper opened a round of remarks from the party leaders, once again calling the killings of Cirillo, and a soldier in Quebec earlier this week terrorism.
There’s been a nation-wide outpouring of grief, sympathy… and support for members of the Canadian Forces.
Courtenay City Councillor Jon Ambler is a former commander of one the region’s biggest military bases; 19 Wing Comox.
Opposition Leader Tom Mulcair of the NDP, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May also addressed the House. Saying all Canadians are thinking of and praying for the family and friends of Cirillo.
