About half of the new CVRD board will be made up of newcomers.
Voting day saw three new mayors elected in North Cowichan, Duncan, and Lake Cowichan and new directors emerged in areas A, C, and G.
While former North Cowichan Mayor Jon Lefebure was the board chair for the last four years, Manager of Communications and Engagement with the CVRD Kris Schumacher explains the process of the board electing a new chair and vice chair.
“The corporate secretary will call for nominations for the chair of the board if there’s only one nomination that comes forward for the chair, then they’re acclaimed,” said Schumacher. “If there are two or more candidates that get nominated from the directors, those candidates have an opportunity to address the board and why they believe they would make a great chair. There is a maximum of 30 minutes allotted for questions of those candidates from the other directors.”
The process is the same in finding the vice chair. Ian Morrison was the outgoing vice chair ahead of the October 20 election.
Schumacher said at least seven new faces will help make up the 15 member board.
“There’s been quite a change-up in terms of councils of the municipalities, there will certainly be new faces coming to the board,” said Schumacher. “It’s not known at this point who those will be, there are a few new electoral area directors, there’s going to be quite a few new faces around the table.”
