Conservationists want Island-wide strategy on water

A conservation group on the Island is sounding the warning about water supplies, and calling for the province work with local governments on a plan to do something about it.
Vancouver Island and Coast Conservation Society president Laurie Gourlay says the area’s climate has been changing, and there’s a noticeable impact on fresh water.
Gourlay also points to conditions on the Cowichan River, where water levels could hit critical lows if there’s no significant rainfall by the end of September.
They want to see a strategy that includes things like provincial help for local governments to buy, or get control of, their watersheds, protecting watersheds across local jurisdictional boundaries, and changes to BC’s Water Modernization Act to look at Vancouver Island as a single region.
