There are renewed calls across the country for an inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women, following the murder of 15-year-old Tina Fontaine in Winnipeg.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper dismissed those calls yesterday, saying they’re crimes, not a sociological phenomenon.
But Jean Crowder, The NDP’s Aboriginal Affairs Critic and MP for Nanaimo Cowichan says the Harper Government’s out of touch.
Crowder says aboriginal woman are over-represented in the numbers of Canadians who go missing and are murdered.
She says along with a national inquiry, the government also needs to support preventative measures like women’s shelters and programs to address drug and alcohol issues.
