The Stz uminus (Chemainus) First Nation is planning to stop certain boats from entering the coastal waters from Sansum Narrows to Dodds Narrows south of Nanaimo.
Ray Gauthier, CEO of the Coast Salish Development Corporation, says they’re not happy with how the federal government has dealt with fishing rights in their territory.
Gauthier says they’ve sent letter to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the provincial government outlining their concerns.
He says the letters are a warning, so far they have not actually blocked any boats from fishing in their territory.
Fisheries and Ocean Minister Gail Shea has issued a written statement, saying there are ongoing discussions with the Chemainus First Nation.
