The Cowichan Valley School District is reaching out to local governments to share their concerns about the proximity of pot shops to schools.
Board Chair Candace Spilsbury says an unlicensed medical marijuana dispensary opened up in North Cowichan last year across the street from Cowichan Secondary School. She would like municipalities to consider zoning bylaws to keep dispensaries away from schools.
The school board wrote a letter to North Cowichan about their concerns in September last year and have yet to receive a response. The board has now passed a motion to send a letter to the CVRD, North Cowichan, Duncan and Lake Cowichan as a proactive measure.
Spilsbury says other municipalities like Victoria and Vancouver have similar policies that would keep dispensaries away from schools, and she’d like to see something similar be considered for the Cowichan Valley.
