The Cowichan Valley is one of the only places on the Island without an overdose prevention site.
Medical Health Officer Dr. Paul Hasselback says other sites across Vancouver Island have proven to benefit the general community and the people who use.
Island Health has received a proposal from a proponent interested in establishing an overdose prevention site in Cowichan.
Medical Health Officer Dr. Paul Hasselback says there are similar sites across the Island – in Victoria, Nanaimo, Comox Valley, Campbell River and Port Alberni.
Hasselback says the overdose prevention site will be completely funded by Island Health, and a location has not been finalized yet.
The goal is to have a site set up by the end of this month or early July.
