Earth Day today

On the heels of Earth Hour late last month comes Earth Day, today (April 22).

Students at Chemainus Secondary School are putting some effort into the event.

Gwynn Parry, a student at the school says a number of initiatives are planned……

Parry says students will also be talking about composting and recycling because Chemainus Secondary is a zero waste school.

She says this Thursday they’ll hold a one hour unplug, when all the student electronics will be unplugged and students will also participate in a beach clean up.

Also, on this, Earth Day, Dr. Nancy Turner of the University of Victoria will be talking about the Cowichan Watershed: Traditional Use From Valley Bottom to Ridge Top.

The professor, from the School of Environmental Studies at U-Vic will be speaking at the VIU Cowichan Campus Lecture Theatre tonight at 7.

Turner, an ethnobotanist has worked with First Nations elders and cultural specialists in northwestern North America for over 40 years, documenting and promoting their traditional knowledge of plants and habitats.

She has authored countless books and papers and her awards include membership in the Order of British Columbia and the Order of Canada.
