Our Cowichan says its not just open burning and pollution that is affecting air quality in the Cowichan Valley – but smoking cigarettes, e-cigarettes and marijuana should be considered too.
Regional Facilitator Cindy Lise presented to North Cowichan Council about the high rates of respiratory illnesses, maternal smoking, and tobacco-related deaths. The group wants to activate a regional task force with representatives from One Cowichan, Island Health, First Nations Leaders and all government in the Cowichna Valley to research new bylaws, and review existing policies on smoking.
Although some members of council shares their concerns with the ability to enforce smoking bylaws, Mayor Lefebure says anything brought forward by the group in the future will be carefully considered.
Councillor Kate Marsh also volunteered to be a part of the task force.
