The Maple Tree lives to see another day.
Though it was scheduled to come down this morning, protestors occupied the site, despite the tree being fenced off with no trespassing signs.
Activist Kim Walters says she has a personal connection to the tree, as her ancestors owned the homestead farm on the land many years ago. She is asking the Island Savings Commission to stop the destruction, and find an alternative plan.
CVRD Community Services Manager John Elzinga says the decision has been made.
Elzinga says to date, delays to scheduled construction work has resulted in approximately $6000Â in additional direct costs, not including significant staff time.
RCMP were on scene this morning to keep the peace.
