The city of Duncan is showing growth in both commercial and residential areas, according to the 2015 Annual Report.
While active business licences saw a slight increase in recent years, Duncan’s population slightly decreased from 2011 to last year. Mayor Phil Kent says while residential growth is evident, the population is always very stagnant, with numbers hovering from 4500 to 5000 residents since 1912.
Kent says the increase in business licences is a positive for the whole Cowichan Valley, as it’s an inter-municipal system for the whole region.
Many major capital projects were completed in 2015 including the Canada Avenue and Cedar Avenue Upgrades, the Cowichan River Dike Projects, Seismic Upgrade of the Duncan Firehall and the Water Metering Program in the CVRD and Cowichan Tribes areas. Kent says future objectives are also outlined in the report.
