Island Medical Health Officer Dr. Paul Hasselback says he is concerned that the sale of edible pot products could lead to more children ending up in hospitals after accidentally ingesting the product.
Because the substance is still illegal, Hasselback says it is hard to create a regulatory environment for the product, making it potentially dangerous, especially for youth. He adds that there needs to be a lot more discussion to prevent overdoses and misuse.
Marijuana edibles, including cookies and candy, will continue to be sold at Victoria’s marijuana dispensaries after their city council voted to allow the sale of them, despite hearing safety concerns from Island Health. Hasselback believes it’s best to stick to oils or products that can be inhaled, and do research to develop an industry for edibles in the future that won’t put children and youth at risk.
