RCMP in Nanaimo and across the Cowichan Valley say the Canada Revenue Agency Scam is very active across the Island, as tax season came to an end earlier this week.
Residents have been receiving phone calls from an individual who claims to be on officer with the Canada Revenue Agency. It is evident he is reading from a script and informs you that you have not paid back taxes. He then informs you if the unpaid taxes are not paid immediately a warrant will be issued for your arrest.
RCMP Corporal Krista Hobday stresses that this is not real. She says your best defense is knowledge – and knowing that this is not how the CRA operates.
Hobday says if you receive these phone calls hang up immediately and do not engage them in conversation. If you believe you are a victim to one of these scams, contact your local RCMP immediately.
